My cousin had asked me to store several old trunks filled with letters and old photos of my great-grandparents. As I perused the photos and studied their faces, it suddenly occurred to me that I could teach myself to paint their photos digitally - in colour!

Inspired by other vintage photo colourists, I began colouring old family photos. As I coloured the photos of my great-grandparents’, their faces emerged from the shadows. Becoming more and more life-like with every layer, soon I was seeing all the incredible resemblances among family members!

In a very profound, personal moment, I sat staring into the bright, young face of my great-grandmother. Even though we never met, I instantly felt a powerful connection to the woman looking back at me in vivid colour.

Ever since, I’ve been obsessed with bringing black and white photos to life with colour and filling in the gaps in my family’s history.

I treat every photograph as I would my own, taking the time to carefully match the colour of the clothing to the era, while striving to maintain the physical traits and personalities as you remember them.
